MODULAR SEATING

A flexible seating concept shaped around adaptable modules, comfort, and contemporary living.

01 / OVERVIEW

This project explores sustainable public seating through the combination of user-centered design and environmentally conscious materials. Developed in collaboration between the University of Osnabrück and German University in Cairo, the design addresses common issues such as vandalism, durability, maintenance, and the perception of public furniture as cheap or uninspiring.

02 / CONCEPT

From the first line to the finished form.

Since concrete accounts for around 8% of global CO₂ emissions, we chose to design a bench made from “green concrete” that is easy to produce and provides space for both people and plants. The plants also serve as natural shading.

REARANGEABLE FURNITURE.

The trapezoidal base module allows the bench system to be arranged in various configurations. Individual units can also be stacked to function as backrests or planters, creating a versatile and multifunctional form.

Sustainable by Design.

The final seating unit combines green concrete made with marble waste and locally sourced palm wood. Through user research, material testing, prototyping, and 1:1 production, the project demonstrated how waste-based materials can replace conventional concrete while offering durability, cost efficiency, and a distinctive aesthetic. The result is a sustainable public seating concept that combines functionality, material innovation, and a strong connection to its local context.
